THE SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY

Whatever your age, whatever your interest, the Severn Valley Railway has something for you to see and do. Your historic train journey will take you back in time to a more leisurely age as you pass from Bridgnorth, Shropshire's gem of a medieval market town through Hampton Loade and Highley; past the timeless village of Arley slumbering on the bank of the river Severn; through the ancient riverside town of Bewdley with its quaysides, gardens and Restoration and Georgian houses; and finally on to the old carpet town of Kidderminster.

The Severn Valley Railway operates on full-size standard-gauge line running regular steam-hauled passenger trains for the benefit of tourists and enthusiasts alike. The journey is full of interest, for the route follows closely the meandering course of the River Severn for most of the way; one highlight of the trip is the crossing of the river by means of the Victoria Bridge - a massive 200-foot single span, high above the water. There are few roads in the Severn valley and some of the views are only visible from the Railway; the scenery is varied and largely unspoiled, punctuated by the quaint 'olde worlde' charm of country stations, each one giving ready access to local villages and riverside walks.

From your carriage window you will glimpse the ancient Wyre Forest, home of myriads of species of flora and fauna, you will travel through ancient coppices and water meadows, past banks and hedgerows each of which is a nature reserve in its own right.

A return ticket on the Severn Valley Railway between Bridgnorth and Bewdley or Kidderminster gives unlimited travel for the day. You can break your journey at any station on the way to your destination. For the rambler, each station is the hub of a network of public footpaths and most of our stations are joined by well-marked paths along the river banks. Both Highley station and Country Park Halt are situated within the boundaries of the Severn Valley Country Park, the wonderfully transformed site of a former large coal mine. All this and more can be sampled from your seat in a carriage which is probably well over fifty years old, pulled by a steam locomotive possibly even older.
